For this review I will be covering the movie Back to the Future starring Michael J. Fox, Christopher Lloyd, Crispin Glover, and Lea Thompson. Prepare for the running commentary of doom.
Running Commentary -
Movie opens in a garage that has all kinds of weird machines in it. Marty shows up and plugs his guitar into the amplifier but it blasts him across the room. Doc calls and Marty realizes he's late for school.
Marty and his girlfriend Jennifer get caught being tardy by Mr. Strickland.
Marty's band the Pinheads tries out for prom but they don't get it. Marty wants to go camping with Jennifer but not tell his mother.
Marty arrives home and finds the car is being towed. Biff wrecked it because of a blind spot.
Biff: "I have your car towed all the way to your house and all you have for me is lite beer?" LOL
Turns out Marty's dad isn't good with confrontations.
Marty gets woken up and goes to Twin Pines Mall to meet Doc Brown. Doc rolls a Delorean out of his big truck. Doc has Marty get a camera and film him using a remote control on the car.
Marty films the car going into the future with Doc's dog Einstein inside.
The car reappears and Doc then shows Marty how it works. He then tells Marty that it works on Plutonium. Doc tells him he ripped off some Libyans and made them a fake bomb out of used pinball machine parts instead of the bomb they wanted him to make.
Doc is about to go into the future but the Libyans show up. The Libyans shoot up Doc and then shoot at Marty. He escapes in the Delorean. Instead of speeding off he goes back in time and ends up crashing into a barn. They think he's an alien and try to kill him before he speeds off in the Delorean.
Marty hides the car behind the Lyon Estates sign and then goes into Hill Valley circa 1955. He stumbles aaround in awe of the whole situation.
The clocktower chimes which Marty has never heard before because it was struck by lightning. He gets a newspaper and it says November 5, 1955.
Marty goes to the diner and tries to call Doc Brown but doesn't get an answer. He then sees Biff and his goons harassing his dad George. Goldie the worker there tries to talk to George about standing up for himself and Marty tells Goldie he's going to be Mayor. Goldie is the Mayor in 1985.
George leaves on his bike and Marty follows him. He realizes that George met his mom by being a peeping tom and falling out of a tree. George falls and Marty pushes him out of the way and gets hit by the car.
Marty wakes up and find Loraine, his mother, in the bed looking at him. She calls him Calvin because of his Calvin Klein underwear.
His grandparents just got a TV and they are watching Jackie Gleason. He asks them for directions about how to get to Doc Brown's house. Loraine wants him to spend the night and she grabs his leg, Marty bails and they think he's strange but Loraine is in love with him.
Dad: "Loraine, if you ever have a kid that acts that way I'll disown you." LMFAO
He arrives at Doc Brown's and asks Doc for help too geet from 1955 to 1985. Doc only believes him after he tells him about the Flux Capacitor.
They get the Delorean and Marty shows him the video he took. Only a bolt of lightning can power the car and Marty shows him the clocktower pamphlet he got when in the park with Jennifer. Doc comes up with a plan to channel it into the Flux Capacitor and send him back to the future.
Doc and Marty arrive at the high school to help his dad fall in love with his mom. Turns out his mom is in love with him. They come up with a plan to set them up for a date at the Enchantment Under the Sea Dance.
Marty talks to George and finds out George is creative. Marty sees Biff harassing Loraine and he goes to defend her and almost fights with Biff.
Marty finds out that George's favorite television show is Science Fiction Theater. He shows up wearing his radiation protection suit to George's room and says he's Darth Vader from the Planet Vulcan. George tells Marty what happened the next day and that Darth Vader would melt his brain unless he went out with Loraine.
George goes to talk with Loraine but Biff shows up and tells him he told him never to come in there. Marty trips Biff and then punches him in the face. Loraine thinks Marty is a dream. Marty uses a makeshift skateboard to escape from Biff and his goons. Biff chases him in his car. They almost run him over but Marty runs over the car and Biff drives into a manure truck. The manure falls all over him and his goons. Great scene.
Doc does a simulation about what will happen when the lightning strikes the Delorean and sets a paint can on fire. Loraine followed him home and he introduces her to his "Uncle" Doc Brown. She wants to go with Marty to the Dance. Turns out she likes him because he's strong and stands up for the woman he loves.
Marty then comes up with a plan for George to stand up for himself and protect her. The plan is for him to try to take advantage of her, George sees it, and then saves her. This stuff is great.
Marty: "If you put your mind to it, you can accomplish anything."
Doc tells Marty he's going to miss him and Marty leaves him a note about him getting shot the night he goes back in time to prevent it from happening.
The dance begins. Marty and Loraine decide to park. Marty finds out Loraine has parked before. She also drinks and smokes which she always tells him not to do. She tells him, "You're beginning to sound just like my mother." lol Irony.
Marty tells Loraine he's nervous and she leans over to kiss him. Marty thinks George is there for the act but it's Biff and his goons. They lock Marty in the trunk of the band's car and the band scares off the goons. George shows up and stands up to Biff. Biff grabs George's arm and Loraine tries to stop him but he pushes her down. George then punches Biff out and saves Loraine.
The band leader hurts his hand and Marty has to take over playing guitar. Some jerk guy cuts in on George's dance with Loraine and Marty starts to disappear both in his picture and in real life. George then pushes the guy down and kisses Loraine. Marty is back to normal now. The crowd cheers the band.
Marty starts playing "Johnny B. Goode" with the band and everyone loves it until he goes '80's metal with the guitar.
Loraine and George tell Marty goodbye. Marty tells them he guarantees they'll see him again.
Marty arrives just in time to get sent back to the future. Doc finds his letter and rips it up. The electrical cable unhooks and Marty has to get the car ready. If they don't time this correctly then he'll be stuck in 1955. Doc keeps trying to hook the cable back up and barely does it right before the lightning strikes. Marty is sent back to 1985.
When Marty arrives back in 1985 the car runs out of gas and he sees the Libyans speed past him in their van. He frantically runs back to the Mall only to see Doc Brown get shot and the Libyans chasing him before he goes to the past.
He runs over and Doc is wearing a bulletproof vest. Turns out Doc taped the letter he wrote back together after he left.
Doc goes into the future and Marty tells him to look him up. Doc speeds off.
Marty wakes up and the house is different. It's much nicer. His brother has a good job and his sister has a ton of boyfriends. This is the opposite of how it was before he left. His parents come in and they look nicer and are a lot more affectionate. His mom likes Jennifer too instead of the opposite. Outside Biff is waxing the car and George is ordering him around which also is the opposite of when he left. Biff hands him the keys and he goes outside to see that he's got the Toyota truck he liked from the past.
Doc suddenly shows up in the time machine and and gets fuel out of the garbage. He tells him to bring Jennifer along and they fly off into the future.
4 1/2 out of 5 stars. This is an instant classic. Michael J. Fox is great in this movie as is Christopher Lloyd as Doc Brown. The story is really good as far as Marty and his dealings with his parents in the past and the present. I really liked this a lot and nothing bad to say about it honestly which as many of you know is pretty rare for me. I will review Parts II and III in the near future.
