The Twilight Zone, Vol. 39 DVDReview:
This is a Twilight Zone DVD with three episodes on it and hopefully it's as good as the last DVD was. Got one more I rented that has a bunch of episodes on it.
Mr. Bevis -
Starts with kids playing in the street by a man with a music accordian and monkey. Mr. Bevis is accident prone but lives a secure life. He's a kind man who also has some weird personality quirks. He's just one block away...from the Twilight Zone. Bevis arrives at work and Mr. Peckinpall wants to see him when he comes in late. Bevis gets fired for the sixth time this year. The car in front of his moves pulling his car into the street and it causes an accident. He comes home to find out he's being evicted so naturally he goes to the bar to get drunk. At the bar he looks in the mirror and sees a man at a table but when he looks over he sees nothing. When he goes over to sit at the table he meets J. Harvey Hempstead his guardian angel. Hempstead shows him some past members of his family. The guardian angel resets his day and he gets to redo it. Hempstead changes his clothes and he goes on his day. He's now the new Bevis and a few minor things are different. People are acting differently around him and he doesn't know what to do. Bevis even has a new car. No one says hi to him at work anymore. His personality quirks have been removed too. Hempstead tells him he's not the same Bevis. Hempstead says he doesn't get Bevis and Bevis doesn't like the new Bevis and wants to go back because he likes it better. Bevis has a good outlook about things and is going to finish the ship Ironsides for the little boy and drives off in his car. Honestly I didn't like this episode. Wasn't too exciting and there wasn't a real twist to it.
The Silence -
Starts off with a man talking and his voice echoing through the ear of a man across the room. He wants to make a wager with his friend. The note the man takes across the room and the terms are part of a casino called...The Twilight Zone. Tennyson reads the note and asks if it's a joke. Colonel Taylor says it's not a joke and that he's serious. Taylor says he will bet him $500,000 to be silent for a year, he will be watched, and monitored and cannot say a word for a year. Says he can only speak through writing. Says Tennyson's voice has become intolerable and he can't take it so he decided to offer a large sum of money just to get silence. Says Tennyson is shallow and callous. Says Tennyson is in desperate straights, has debts, and says he'd probably do anything for money except for maybe stay silent for a year. Tennyson says he can either ignore him or accept his wager. Taylor says he'll be incarcerated downstairs in a room with microphones, his cameras will be in the room, and he can be observed at any time. Tennyson says he wants the check certified and Taylor says no and that everyone there can vouch for him. Tennyson leaves and tells another man he loves a woman but she shops religiously and he has no money. Fast forward and Taylor is amazed he's gone nine weeks without speaking. Says he underestimated Tennyson. The months pass and still Tennyson doesn't speak. Another member tells him he's going to lose and he hopes he has the money at the end of the year. Taylor goes downstairs to talk to him and says it's gone too far and offers him $1,000 to leave right then but Tennyson refuses. Taylor uses mind games to say his wife has been seen with other men and he might lose her. Says it still might be possible for him to save his marriage. It doesn't work. The mind games continue from Taylor as the time goes on. It reaches one year and everyone can't believe he lasted one year. The other man tells Taylor he destroyed himself and rumors about him gossiping about his wife. He tells Taylor that he is weak and the boy is strong. They applaud Tennyson when he is released from the chamber. Tennyson comes out and asks for the money from Taylor. Taylor tells him that he's a fraud and has no money but lost most of his money years ago which forced him to reveal all of this and that he is the superior member. Taylor says he's going to leave. Tennyson stops him from leaving the club and writes a note. Taylor reads the note. It says that Tennyson had the nerves to his vocal cords severed because he knew he couldn't keep his part of the bargain. Great ending.
On Thursday We Leave For Home -
Starts off with a Captain telling another man to turn the frequency in another direction. The people under his command are all in line waiting to get water. A man comes out and the Captain chastized him for not going to his radar post on time and says he will be taking over his post for. They've been stranded on an alien planet with two suns for thirty years with no radio contact. Their ship was the Pilgrim I, the first colonization ship from Earth. William Benteen is the Captain and the leader of the stranded colonists. A signal from Earth a month earlier said a rescue ship would be coming to pick them up. Captain is going to have them cut off the water to use the water to fix up the machines. A woman commits suicide and they bury her. That was the ninth person in the six months to commit suicide. The young man wants to talk about rules and Benteen talks about the young stealing from the old and disregarding the food rationing. Benteen has them all say "There's a ship coming." Right after they say this there's a meteor storm. They all scramble to the cave for safety. A little boy is scared and wants Benteen to talk about the Earth. He talks about leaves changing color, water in the ocean, clouds in the sky, about the night sky, and snow in the winter. The boy asks why they left. Benteen says he thought they could find another planet like Earth, a planet without war, and make their own way but they couldn't do it on this planet and that they are waiting. Just then the meteor shower stops and Benteen hears the rescue ship arriving. The rescue ship arrives and it looks like a UFO. Captain Sloan comes out and tells them their orders are to take them back from Earth. Everyone celebrates. Sloan and Benteen go over plans to leave in three days. Sloan tells him about Earth and say that nothing has changed. For some reason Sloan keeps asking about the caves and rooms underground wondering if they are colder. Sloan gives the people all sorts of new things. Benteen is starting to get jealous. Benteen is wanting to get everyone prepared to leave but instead Sloan shows up and starts telling them about what it's like on Earth. Sloan wants to have a ball game after they are done and everyone agrees but Benteen is left by himself in the cave. Benteen tells Sloan that here on the planet he is in control but on the ship Sloan is. Sloan tells him he's not trying to usurp his power. Sloan ends the game and Benteen tells him he's got an iron will. Says he's been the governor, father figure, and leader for 30 years. Sloan tells his man Benteen thinks he's a God and they're taking him out of his heaven. Benteen has decided that on Earth that they are staying together on Earth. He tells Sloan that the people are children and that they will be staying together. Sloan tells Benteen to ask them. During the meeting they are asking about the Earth cities and Sloan says they will stick together. Benteen says that they will stay together and there will be good farming. The younger man tells him that they will go off on their own. Benteen then goes on a rant about people fighting each other to stay alive and that's why they need to stay together. He wants them to chant "Together" but only four or five people say it and no one else does. Benteen walks out of the room. Benteen finally meets up with Sloan. Benteen tells him they called him the messiah and they brought nothing but selfishness. Sloan says they have no diseases or viruses because they are in a sterile environment. Says they need to rejoin society as individuals. Benteen says Earth was incredible but about an Earth that doesn't exist and an Earth that is all a lie before saying they cannot go back there. He then gathers the people to tell them something. During a new meeting Benteen tells them about violence and hatred on the Earth. He tells them that if they leave they will die and they don't belong there. Sloan wants them to vote on it. Benteen says it will never be a garden. Sloan says Earth is a race of men struggling for survival and there will be no Captain Benteen's down there. Says they wont be sheep and when they pray to God his name isn't Benteen. They vote and everyone but Benteen raises their hands. Benteen grabs a metal pipe and starts whacking the UFO before being tackled down by one of his men. Says tomorrow they will be getting on a ship they think will take them to paradise but instead they will be going to Hell. Sloan goes into the cave with one of his men looking for Benteen. Sloan wants to talk. They try to talk him into coming out and leaving with them but he only appears after they leave. Benteen starts talking to the empty room about the beauty of the Earth but then suddenly runs out to see the ship leaving. He continues to say that the Earth is green and starts yelling not to leave him there and he wants to go home. Instead Benteen is left alone on the planet. Great episode about power and control.
Overall: I liked the second episode the best out of the three episodes. The first one was the worst because it wasn't as good as a normal Twilight Zone episode. However the second episode more than made up for it with the great twist ending. The third episode was long but it deals with people having too much control and power only to lose it.
