Dark City Review

Today I'm going to review Dark City. This movie stars Rufus Sewell, Kiefer Sutherland, William Hurt, and Jennifer Connelly.

Running Commentary -
Narration begins it. First there was darkness and then came the strangers. They had the power called Chuning that alters physical reality by will. They came to Earth seeking a cure to their own mortality. They thought they'd found what they'd been searching for. The narrator is Dr. Daniel Schreber. He works with the strangers and has betrayed humanity.
Whoa...everything in the city stopped. Everyone has fallen over. This is already good.
Begins with a man waking up in a bathtub with a cut between his eyebrows. He goes to change and gets his keys. Suddenly he gets a phone call from Schreber who tells him he lost his memory and says people are coming for him. Said they must not find him and he must leave now. He then finds a woman's body and a knife in his room before running off as the people arrive. He leaves the hotel but everyone is asleep but him but they soon wake up.
Three strange looking men with white skin and gloves are in his room. They put the hotel manager to sleep after asking where Murdoch, the protaganist, is.
JENNIFER CONNELLY!
Shreber tells his wife that he's looking for him and he's been missing for three weeks.
The cops are now looking for Mr. Murdoch too.
MURDOCH HAS POWERS! He opened the case with his wallet using a beam from his forehead. What the hell is going on in this movie?
Mrs. Murdoch shows up at the police station and the lead inspector tells her that her husband has killed all of the women on the paper he shows her. She gets mad and leave.
John Murdoch gets confronted by the strange looking men and boy with the pale skin. Their powers dont work on him but he has powers too. They try to kill him but he chokes one and causes a sign to cut off of the top of one of their heads. THERE'S TENTACLES COMING FROM HIS HEAD! AWESOME!
The aliens have a meeting about John. One says Murdoch is different and they find out Mr. Quick is dead. The leader of the aliens wants to possess him.
John shows up at his apartment and he doesn't know who his wife is. She gives him the doctor's card.
The aliens confront the doctor and Dr. Shreber tells them that he has no memories. The aliens want him because he can tune like they do.
The cop shows up and is chasing after John. John goes outside and disappears so the cop can't find him but he does find the card for Dr. Shreber.
Frank the cop goes to see Eddie a former cop and he says that he doesn't know if that's his wife and that he doesn't know who anybody is. He can't remember anything from his past and that all of this is his wife. That when he wakes up he can be somebody totally different. Eddie tells him there is no case and this is all a big joke. ALWAYS listen to the crazy people in these movies. They usually are the only ones who have a clue about what's happening.
In the alien's lab Dr. Shreber says they are looking for the human soul and says that he thinks Murdoch has adapted and evolved due to the conditions which is why he doesn't sleep when he others do.
WHOA! THERE'S A GIANT TOWER RISING OUT OF THE GROUND!
New buildings are rising that weren't there before. Murdoch watches as they come out of a door that appears out of nowhere. Dr. Shreber is with them. He watches as Shreber sets a new family up in a house and injects them with the memory serum. Murdoch confronts Shreber and asks him about what's happening.
The visuals in this are great.
The aliens use his memories to find him.
Eddie meets up with Murdoch and he tells him that they will keep looking for him just like they keep looking for him. Eddie figured a way out and jumps in front of a train.
John finds his uncle and he finds out he was born in Shell Beach. The uncle shows him pictures and reminds him that he was burned in the fire but he has no scar. Carl his uncle gets a call from his wife and John runs off. He knows the cops are after him.
Murdoch fights an alien and gets his knife. The alien tells him why they do what they do and says they yse their dead as vessels. He says that they change things, use city parts from different eras to build it anew each night.
The aliens start chasing down John by using the building to try and squash him. He finally escapes with Frank and his wife. John starts interrogating the cop about memories when he's hounded for information. John doesn't think there's a sun in this place.
John talks to his wife and wonders if all of those memories never happened but someone wants them to think it was real.
Shreber confronts John and wants him to inject himself with a needle so he will understand. Frank arrives to stop him and leaves with Shreber. Frank wants Shreber to take them to Shell Beach at gunpoint. Shreber says that they will find nothing there. Says they will be waiting for them. Shreber tells them that they can find out how the human soul works by seeing how our memories works. Shreber tells John he is different because he resisted his imprinting on him and now can cune like they do. Says they needed someone to help them and made him be the scientist who works for them. Says they brought them there and says he doesn't remember from where.
They arrive at Shell Beach and Shreber says nothing exists outside of the city. They find a Shell Beach poster on a wall. John and Frank go to destroy it. They pull apart the bricks and HOLY CRAP! THEY'RE IN OUTER SPACE!
The aliens show up and Frank and one of them float out into space. This is really good. The entire city is on a spaceship. AWESOME visual.
The aliens capture him and Shreber tells him they want to use his soul to make him one of them. In his dream flashback Shreber tells him exactly how to defeat the aliens using their own machine.
John gets out of his restraints and starts to use his powers on the aliens.
HOLY CRAP! AWESOME MIND FORCE BATTLE BETWEEN JOHN AND THE HEAD ALIEN! EVERYTHING IS EXPLODING ALL AT ONCE! AWESOME SCENE!
All of the aliens are floating through the air and John kills the head alien by smashing him through a water tower. John then uses his powers to make the world how he wants it to be. The first thing he does is add water. He recreates Shell Beach and gives sunlight to the city. John then finds his wife on the beach and asks her if she wants to go to Shell Beach. They decide to go walk over to Shell Beach. Her name now is Anna due to the aliens changing her memories. Them walking down the pier ends the movie.

Overall:
3 1/2 out of 5 stars. The whole mutant powers John storyline was more like something you would see in an X-Men movie and the Eddie storyline, with him waking up and seeing what's going on, makes more sense than the main storyline. However, that said, this movie was really good visually, acting wise, and story wise other than John's Professor X powers storyline. The rest was good and the aliens were creepy.
